April Jerby of the Month: Helen Back

Posted on April 27th, by Anaya Later in Junior Derby, Silicon Valley Roller Girls, Skater of the Month, Uncategorized. Comments Off

Although new to derby and SVRG 2.0, Helen Back is a name that you are bound to hear more of! Having just started in January, Helen is making amazing progress in her skating abilities from week to week, even with her busy schedule outside of derby. Her dedication to improvement, thirst for knowledge, and incredible footwork are just part of what makes Helen SVRG 2.0’s Jerby of the Month. Congratulations Helen!

1. What is your derby name and number? How did you decide on them?

Helen Back, 66. Helen Back is a play on words for Hell and Back. I chose it simply because it sounds intimidating. Like bouting against me is like going to hell and back. Haha. The number part is a little homage to Route 66, since I really really really really love road tripping.

2. How long have you ... Read More »

April Skater of the Month: Faye Tality

Posted on April 26th, by Anaya Later in Roller Derby, Silicon Valley Roller Girls, Skater of the Month. 1 Comment

One of Silicon Valley Roller Girls' newest league members, Faye Tality, is April's Skater of the Month. Faye has started out the 2014 season as the co-captain of SVRG's Hard Drivers. She leads by example with her spotless attendance, tireless skills practice, and her great attitude. Congratulations on Skater of the Month Faye!

How did you get involved with roller derby? When did you start?

I was downtown in San Jose for a Sharks game in 2011, and saw some women dressed in team jerseys and skates. My first reaction was “Holy crap… there’s derby in San Jose??? I’ve wanted to be a derby girl since the first time I saw it on TV as a child.” I chatted with a couple of them, who turned out to be SVRG skaters, and who encouraged me to come check it out. ... March Skater of the Month: Eve L. Twin

Posted on April 13th, by Anaya Later in Silicon Valley Roller Girls, Skater of the Month. Comments Off

Eve L. Twin is a newer name to the SVRG family but not to derby. If you think her name sounds familiar you have most likely seen her in action with her previous team the Monterey Bay Derby Dames. Twin transferred to SVRG during the end of our 2013 season and is now a part of the Dot.Kamikazes, the leagues WFTDA charter team.

*How did you first get started in roller derby?

I first got started when I was attending CSUMB down in Monterey. I saw a flyer in our cafe about Monterey Bay Derby Dames’ roller disco event for anyone interested in Roller Derby. I contacted the fresh meat coach, bought someone’s used skates, and never looked back.

*What is the story behind your name?

I am known to be the ‘evil’ one between me and my twin sister. ... Read More »

March Circuit Jerk of the Month: Brassica I'llRaceYa

Posted on April 3rd, by Anaya Later in Recreational League, Skater of the Month. Comments Off

You may have seen Brassica I’llRaceYa slinging beers at our last home game on March 15th. She has been skating with Circuit Jerks for a while now, and recently went through league try-outs. You will see her skating soon with the Hard Drivers! Congratulations on March Circuit Jerk of the Month AND on becoming one of our newest Hard Drivers!!!

What is your derby name and number? How did you decide on it?

Brassica I'llRaceYa #7 of 9. Brassica oleracea is the Latin name for the group of cultivars commonly known as broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc. I do bacterial testing of brassica seeds, among others, for my work. Brassica are little roly poly seeds that roll all over and are hard to control. The analogy was obvious and the play on words pleased me. 7 of 9 is a character from ... Read More »

March Junior Derby of the Month: Lucky Harms

Posted on April 3rd, by Anaya Later in Junior Derby, Skater of the Month. Comments Off

An SVRG 2.0 skater since October 2013, Lucky Harms is SVRG’s March Junior Derby (Jerby) of the Month. Lucky is making great progress as a Jerby skater. Having only skated for a few months, Lucky Harms was awarded Rookie of the Year for 2013. You won’t be able to catch her as a Jerby girl for much longer as this lucky lady will soon be turning 18 and moving on up to one of SVRG’s adult teams. Congratulations Lucky, keep up the hard work!

What is your derby name and number? How did you decide on it?

My derby name is Lucky Harms and my number is 17. Really, the name is just what I loved most after months of indecision. Part of the reason I chose it is that I love the theme that I can incorporate into my ... Read More »

Skater of the Month: Stevie Knickers

It is more likely that you will hear Stevie Knickers before you see her. Selling tickets, grilling hot dogs, engaging an audience, Stevie is out and about at SVRG events. She is an unstoppable force who is equally intimidating and absolutely loveable. She retired from competitive roller derby this summer after she was part of the team that won the inaugural Attack of the C Squads tournament in Sonora, CA. Married to Brigid Fitch, Stevie is a beloved member of the community. Congratulations on being voted in as the December 2013 Skater of the Month, Stevie! We love you.

You recently retired from SVRG after skating with the league for years. Tell us about that transition back into civilian life.
It’s been pleasant, actually. I cried like a baby after my last bout, because it was quite overwhelming. I felt joy, relief, ... Read More »

Skater of the Month: Patty Hearse

Posted on November 15th, by Leigh in Skater of the Month. 2 comments

Patty Hearse is aggressive, fearless and often downright terrifying on the track. But despite how she may appear to her opponents, to the Silicon Valley Roller Girls Patty Hearse is a warm and thoughtful league member who is the November Skater of the Month. In fact, she was previously voted to be the Skater of the Month in April 2012 (http://svrollergirls.com/skater-of-the-month-patty-hearse) while she was learning to play roller derby. Soon thereafter, Patty made it through tryouts and was invited to join the league in July 2012. She quickly made her way onto a KillaBytes roster and has never looked back. A leader on and off the track, she’s well known by fans. At the next bout, listen for them to chant “Hearse! Hearse! Hearse!” as Patty makes her way around the track during team introductions and when she takes the ... Read More »

Skater of the Month: Kraken Rox

Posted on October 16th, by Leigh in Skater of the Month. Comments Off

A relatively new league skater, long-time NSO and volunteer Kraken Rox is our October 2013 Skater of the Month. Dedicated, hard-working and fun, she has stepped up to take on a number of roles within SVRG. No matter what challenge she faces, Kraken meets it head on with a smile. Elected to serve as the Head of Public Relations, Kraken is an important member of our league off the track, where she develops relationships and identifies opportunities for SVRG to shine. Congratulations, Kraken!

How did you get into roller derby?
My sister has been involved in derby for the past seven years, first as a skater and now as a referee. I had a big life change a year ago and decided it was time for something new and radical.

Skater of the Month: Take-Out Dinah

Posted on September 24th, by Leigh in Skater of the Month. Comments Off

Our September Skater of the Month will slay you with her kindness and brilliant smile. Take-Out Dinah began her derby journey when she attended an SVRG bout. At the beginning of 2013, Dinah transferred to SVRG from the Peninsula Roller Girls, and rostered throughout the season for each the KillaBytes and the Hard Drivers. Dinah is a double threat jammer and blocker, always up to play any position. If you ever saw her doing push-ups, it was because she had been overheard apologizing - there’s no “sorry!” in roller derby. She will either quit apologizing, or will have killer arms.

Congratulations Dinah, and good luck on your move! Your SVRG leaguemates hope they love you as much in New York as we do here in Silicon Valley.

A force for SVRG both on and off the track, Adrinaline Crush is our August 2013 Skater of the Month. Adri joined SVRG as a skater in early 2012 after graduating from our Bootcamp program (known then as Culo Whippin’). Her skating skills developed quickly and she earned a place on our all-star roster, the Dot.Kamikazes, in the second half of 2012. She is a quick and agile blocker who comes out of nowhere to thwart opposing blockers and jammers on the track. Elected to serve as the Head of Sponsorship for the 2013 season, Adri has been in the community developing relationships and creating partnerships with our fantastic business partners. Congratulations, Adri!
