So you want to play roller derby? Prepare thyself.
As a recent graduate of the Fall 2015 SVRG boot camp I’d like to share with you my experience so you’ll have a better understanding of what you can expect.
Unless you are joining boot camp with some prior level of skating experience, you won’t become an awesome skater overnight and certainly not by the end of the boot camp. So do yourself a favor and throw those expectations out the window. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING has come easily to me in derby. I have had to work my butt off for every skill I have attained.
Don’t expect that you will magically “get it,” by attending the classes offered 2-3x a week. Practice the drills you learn outside of boot camp. I was skating 5-6 days a week my first 6 months. The ... Read More »
“S-V-R-G! WE! ARE! FAMILY!” That call-and-response cheer is joyously shouted by the Silicon Valley Roller Girls after each practice and before each bout, but it wasn’t until I found myself skating in the San Jose Rose, White, and Blue parade on Independence Day, wearing a bright green tutu and chanting alongside my new friends and teammates that I realized how quickly this group of people have come to feel like family.
It’s been said that Roller Derby is something that you find during life transitions and that statement definitely rings true for me. It was August of last year that my husband and I decided to sell the majority of our belongings and head out west. I’d been presented with a job opportunity that would finally bring me to the Bay Area, the place I’ve dreamt of living ... Read More »

If you were to attend a typical practice for the Silicon Valley Roller Girls, at first glance the crossover between our love of derby and our love for a plethora of other fandoms may not be immediately apparent. But upon closer inspection, you start to notice the geek shirts and tattoos, maybe peek into the book drive collection box to be greeted by the site of an overwhelming number of fantasy and sci-fi novels, or maybe you overhear some locker room conversation about how everyone needs to wear their Star Wars shirts for our practice on May 4th and it becomes apparent that we both collectively and individually have a lot more passions in our life beyond roller derby. From Star Wars to Monty Python, to Harry Potter to Dungeons and Dragons, Dr. Who, zombies, Hayao Miyazaki, Pokemon, Game of ... Read More »

Our fans know that the Silicon Valley Roller Girls are a hard-hitting sports team. Did you know that SVRG is a legit (501 c3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving our community? This year, we’ve created partnerships with several community-based organizations and our skaters will volunteer to plant gardens, build homes, collect books for women in prison, distribute school supplies to kids in need, teach health & wellness to the daughters of farmworkers and lead empowerment workshops with young female athletes. That’s just a snapshot of our activities through the summer of 2015!
In April, SVRG volunteered at HaTikvah (Hope) House, an assisted living and micro-community for developmentally disabled adults alongside members of the Congregation Shir Hadash. This event provided a wonderful multi-generational opportunity for our skaters to engage with HaTikvah residents in a meaningful and fun way, while focusing on the ... Read More »
