Dads in Derby, part 3
Welcome back blogfans!
In celebration of Father's Day, we're hearing from Dads in SVRG! Our finale comes from Twistedwisker, an SVRG coach and a member of the SF Bay Bombers.
It's hard to remember what I did before derby... well, at least, it's hard to imagine how I actually thought I was enjoying my life. I have been on wheels of some sort, from quads to blades, skateboards to BMX, and a few home made contraptions in between. I used to watch banked track roller derby as a kid on TV and always had a love for the sport.
I became a father at an early age and one day a friend of mine, (Dual Cannonz) asked if I'd like to get involved in this new flat track roller derby team that just started, the Silicon Valley Roller Girls. It was everything I wanted to be a part of! Unfortunately, I didn't have the time between work and time with my daughter.
About 5 years go by and outta the blue, derby comes back with a whip and clears the line for me to apex jump for the lead! I was asked to coach the Faultline Derby Devilz in Hollister, CA. I had the time and the love for the sport still. So I laced up and got derby! There's been no going back! Since, I've had the opportunity to include my daughter in many different functions from bouts to volunteering, and she's watched me as a coach, a skater, and fulfill my dream of becoming a sponsored skater, and also getting signed by the San Francisco Bay Bombers to now coaching for SVRG. I've been able to show my daughter first hand what it means to follow your dreams, give back to the community and surround her with strong women that will inspire her to follow her heart. I am honored to be a part this family, and privileged to have a group of people that is all about the "Derby Love"
SVRG wants to wish all dads out there a happy Father's Day and urge every one of them to join our league!
