Belle Wringer

Thank you for making the SVRG Red Cross blood drive a success!

The Silicon Valley Roller Girls had a huge turnout at this past
Saturday’s Red Cross Blood Drive with 28 completed blood donations.
There were so many additional donors available that some walk-ins
weren’t able to be taken in and had to be booked for other blood
drives. Staff from the Red Cross said it was the biggest turnout the
donation bus had ever seen!

SVRG wants to thank everyone who participated in the event to help
save lives, especially our donors and staff who helped to keep the
event running smoothly.  Many SVRG skaters also gave blood, including
Mauly Anna, Belle Wringer, Tennessee Smitan, Avida Sane!, Jene’mesis,
Catherine Beata Bones, Aim De Kill, Scait Riot, Smack Dahlia,
Pandamonium, the injured Saucy Monstrosity, and referee Teddy Wreckspin.

SVRG is already planning a bigger event to allow us to host more
donors for next year. ... Read More »

Brrraaaaains! SVRG rawrggggs at Zombie-o-rama

Posted on August 27th, by demonic in Silicon Valley Roller Girls, SVRG Events. 1 Comment

Vegas, Belle, Satan's Kitten, and Retox Fox played hooky from practice on Wednesday night to go promote our upcoming bout at Zombie-o-rama in downtown San Jose. In between flesh feasts we got to chat up a lot of local zombies who can now list roller derby alongside brains as things they love!

On Friday, Fox, Catherine Beata Bones, and Bitch Puddin' spent a lovely morning and afternoon getting patrons of the downtown San Jose Farmers' Market excited about our upcoming bout on September 11...not to mention sparking the interest of a few potential recruits. Hit us up!

The San Jose Downtown Association has been a great partner and supporter of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls, and we'd like to say another thank you to Amy Anderson and the great crew for helping us reach new fans this summer!

Skater of the Month: Retox Fox

I am very grateful to my awesome teammates for bestowing this honor upon me. However, interviewing myself is a little meta and a lot awkward. Take a shot with me and let's roll:

How did you get into roller derby?

I was getting signals for a couple of years. As soon as a team started up in my hometown, Louisville, my dad cut out every newspaper article or ad about the Derby City Roller Girls and mailed it to me, but I didn’t have a team where I was living (in the seventh circle of Hell, or southwest Florida). When I moved to Tucson, my BFF/roommate told me he thought derby would be a perfect match for me, but grad school was eating me alive. My final push was actually seeing derby in the flesh—a friend took me to Virgin MusicFest in ... Read More »

SVRG Helps Sacred Heart Pack-a-Back for Schoolkids

Posted on August 13th, by demonic in Community Service. 1 Comment

Over the past two Fridays, the Silicon Valley Roller Girls helped 1,600 needy children get backpacks full of school supplies for the coming school year. MaulyAnna, Frida Khill*ya, Smack Dahlia, Avida Sane, Sasha Degrader, Donna Diggler, Zootown Throwdown, Lizapalooza, and Raci Nikkers spent time packing the backpacks full of paper, notebooks, markers, calculators, USB drives, and other grade-appropriate supplies. Belle Wringer, Retox Fox, and Latin Crippler helped direct traffic and assist children in choosing their backpacks. We were happy to see so many children get the supplies they need to start another year of learning!

SVRG is a win-win; Killas take down ACDG Rocket Queens 118-72 and Dots pummel Treasure Valley 208-68

The luau-themed Freaky Tiki Throwdown was a fun-filled evening for fans and skaters alike. Victory was in the air at San Jose Skate on Saturday night as both Silicon Valley Roller Girls’ teams, the KillaBytes and the Dot.Kamikazes, racked up solid wins.

The KillaBytes were coming off an amazing performance (albeit, a loss) against the Denver Roller Dolls’ Bruising Altitude on June 12. They were curious as to what the Angel City Derby Girls’ Rocket Queens would be bringing, since the team has undergone a reboot (several retirements and lots of new blood) since they faced the Dot.Kamikazes last season. Given their younger roster, the team was matched against the KillaBytes this season instead. The KillaBytes were also excited to face the Rocket Queens since a former SVRG bootcamper, Blow Hole, had moved to southern California and was on the ACDG ... Read More »

SVRG helps local men Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

Posted on April 25th, by demonic in Community Service, Silicon Valley Roller Girls. Comments Off

This past Wednesday, amidst the cold rain and hail, members of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls joined the YWCA's annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in downtown San Jose. Bozo Disposo, Bitch Puddin', BootyVicious, Feisty Irish, Spankin' Firecracker, Cole Cocked, Belle Ringer, Retox Fox, and refs Peter F., Christopher, and Dual Cannonz (currently with Santa Cruz) joined the crew. The walk is designed to promote awareness about rape and sexual assault. During the walk, men don high heels and other women's shoes to literally walk a mile (okay, more like half a mile) in her shoes.

Before the walk, different speakers shared their stories and elaborated on the frightening statistics about these crimes. A cymbal clashed every 5 minutes to remind the audience about the frequency of sexual assault in the U. S. Although the dreary rain represented the ... Read More »

SVRG crafts with the Palo Alto Art Center

Posted on April 13th, by demonic in Community Service. Comments Off

This past Sunday, April 11, Retox Fox, Steffin' Razor, and Belle Wringer ventured to Palo Alto to help the Palo Alto Art Center host a Family Day. The free event allows parents to bring their children in for a day of crafting and learning about art. The event was focused on the gallery's current exhibit on Mexican folk art, "Treasures of the Mexican Museum: A Spirited Legacy." (It closes April 18, so get there this week!)

Kids were invited to watch musical and dance performances and participate in several activities, including making clay animals, paper flowers, bark paintings, and maracas; learning how to make and cook tortillas; and drawing themselves into a community mural based on an untitled painting by Oaxacan artist Rodolfo Morales (which, as a result, features a SVRG derby girl and her roller skating unicorn friend.) We had ... Read More »

San Diego Hard Corps inch past KillaBytes, 108-105; Dot.Kamikazes quell the Dockyard Derby Dames, 158-88

Posted on March 7th, by demonic in SVRG Bouts. 4 comments

Wow, for those of you who couldn't make our doubleheader on Saturday, you missed an amazing night of roller derby!

First up, the Silicon Valley Roller Girls’ KillaBytes faced off against San Diego’s Hard Corps. In December, members of SVRG’s Dot.Kamikazes and KillaBytes had traveled to San Diego to play a scrap bout (i.e., an unofficial bout where whomever can go and play does) with a hybrid of their A and B teams and ended up losing in the last moments of the bout. Given San Diego’s stellar level of play, the Killas were looking forward to hosting them on SVRG’s home turf. The KillaBytes were also very excited to debut three new skaters who graduated from bootcamp at the end of last season and were skating in their very first bout: Absolutely Scabulous, Bozo Disposo, and Catherine Beata Bones.

SVRG sorts with RAFT

Posted on January 17th, by demonic in Community Service. Comments Off

The ladies of SVRG kicked off the new year with a service opportunity sorting school supplies at the Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT). RAFT is an amazing organization that collects donations and used supplies from businesses and then recycles or repurposes them to benefit teachers. We spent most of the day going through bins full of donated binders, organizing them by size and color, which can then be reused or, if damaged, are cut apart for use in other projects. Many binders have a clear plastic sheet on the front so that you can slide in a descriptive front page--but because of their stiff backs and the clear material, they can operate as sort of mini-whiteboards with dry erase markers. (It also got me to thinking that that would be a great thing for when I use recipes torn out ... Read More »

SVRG reps in Ocean Beach

Posted on December 20th, by demonic in Around the World. 2 comments

On our recent venture to San Diego, some of us KillaBytes headed to Ocean Beach to frolic in the sand (and seaweed). From left, Satan's Kitten, Retox Fox, Bitch Puddin', and Belle Wringer pose in front of the seaweed SVRG that Kitten and Belle sculpted in the sand. Afterwards, our art was viciously attacked by rabid seagulls, who later stalked us for our delicious Hodad's burgers. Yeah, I'd like to see you come after us on skates, mofos!
